Reiki and Dressage

As a dressage rider and horse trainer, I find Reiki gets me in the right frame of mind for working with my horses. I am a qualified Reiki practitioner under my married name, Claire Ballardie.

Mindfulness, and being ‘in the moment’ is essential to really be in tune with your horse. Focusing on breathing, and listening to sounds around you, and being aware of things happening right now, and not ‘what if’ this or that happens. Horses will pick up any anxiety from the rider, and become anxious themselves.

IMG_0351Reiki can pin-point areas of tension in my horse’s body, and my own. A recent reiki treatment with one of my horses highlighted tenderness around the elbow area. I consequently used a longer girth with the buckles away from this point, and Hey Presto! I have a free-moving horse who is very happy in his work. A simple solution, just by being very aware of my horse’s reactions.

Floor work

Floor work is great for improving mobility of the spine and gives support to your back. You will lay on your back for abdominal work. Leg raises and working with your legs above your body are great ways to strengthen your abdominal muscles without doing endless sit-ups!

Laying on your front, your body will be supported by the floor and with your arms while doing mobility exercises for the spine.

Chair-based work

If you are unable to get down onto the floor, you can exercise in a chair, but it is important to remain upright with correct alignment of your spine, and to not slump, as you will not feel the benefit of these movements.

reiki hand chakra coloursWhat is Reiki?

There is an ancient belief in traditional Chinese Medicine that all physical bodies have a life force or “chi” that flows around us along energy paths called meridians, with centres of energy at various points called chakras.

For the body to heal itself, it needs to be in balance. Reiki puts positive energy into the body. Each energy point, or chakra, is responsible for certain body areas of the body and can also be linked to certain emotions. Sometimes, due to emotional upset or physical trauma, chakras become blocked or sluggish and the flow of energy cannot get through. Reiki rebalances these energy fields and restores the body’s self-healing attributes.

Reiki ( Universal life force energy) is an ancient technique, re-discovered by Dr Mikao Usui a Japanese theologian, in the 19th century. It is used to provide that extra boost for the body, promoting the flow of energy helping the body heal itself naturally.

During a treatment, I will channel this energy through my hands and use it to rebalance the chakras, or centres of energy.

Reiki and Riding

Norm trotReiki can help you to be in the moment with your horse, gaining a closer relationship developing harmony and trust between you. It can help you to become more aware of small changes in yourself which may affect your horse through his training and care. Reiki can give you a sense of great calm, condusive with gaining connection, confidence, and communication with your equine partner, whether working on the ground or from the saddle.

I have always had a close affinity with all animals, especially horses, for as long as I can remember, but only recently have I had the courage to acknowledge that I have inherited this skill, which has led me along this path, helping others.

Grandma HAs a dressage rider and trainer (Claire Lilley) for most of my life, I have always been able to ‘tune in’ to riders and their horses to help to pin-point issues affecting their progress and I have developed this ability and qualified as a reiki practitioner, following the path of my grandmother, who was renoun for her skills as a healer of both people and animals, travelling all over the world, which was a mean feat in her generation.

Riding lessons with a difference

As well as a ‘normal’ riding lesson, I can help you with other aspects, which can improve your relationship with your horse and your riding technique:

Improve your posture and suppleness on the ground with simple exercises and stretching. Many riders have stiffness or crookedness often stemming from old injuries, and attending to these issues will improve posture and physical balance. A crooked rider will affect the straightness and way of going of the horse.

Reiki treatment will balance your energy centres, and create harmony between your mind and body. This can improve your ability to be ‘in the moment’ with your horse as you work with him either on the ground or in the saddle, and help your awareness of what aids your horse needs, which are essential to understanding your horse, and for him to understand you.

Being in the right frame of mind is essential to training horses. Riding can be an emotional rollercoaster, and you may want to talk about issues affecting your progress. Emotional ‘baggage’ can hinder clear thinking. You may recognize this as what I call the ‘What if?’ syndrome- for example, What if I fall off?’ ‘What if my horse gallops off?’

As a counselling student, in my fourth level of training, I can give you time to talk if it helps you.You may need to talk after a lesson or reiki session, so I am happy to do this, and be a ‘listening ear’.

Anything you say is confidential, unless I am legally required to disclose information. You may wish to seek further professional help, in which case we can plan the best way forwards for you.

Reiki for Horses

I can treat both you and your horse. Your horse must feel at ease and in their normal surroundings and routine as much as possible in order to get the most from the treatment. A session will leave them feeling very relaxed and some horses take a nap soon after as part of the healing process.

A Reiki session can be anything up to an hour as the horse dictates when he/she has had enough by moving away. Some horses, like some people, take up and use the healing energy a lot more effectively than others.

Reiki for your Pet

Your pet is best treated in familiar surroundings to aid relaxation. Reiki healing is a gentle contact with the animal with my hands, or I can work in close proximity. Most animals enjoy Reiki and will approach for this gentle touch when they are ready. Your pet may be quite sleepy afterwards and might want to rest quietly.

Animals instinctively know how much healing they need and will generally move away when they have had enough. Some animals choose to stay a short distance away but they will still receive the healing energy the same.

Reiki can help with stress, pain, anxiety and behavioral problems. The therapy is very calming and can help an agitated animal relax.

IMPORTANT LEGISLATION

If they are under veterinary care you must obtain their permission for Reiki treatment to be given and they may even want to be present.

It is very important that you obtain veterinary treatment for a sick animal and that you inform them that you wish to give them Reiki healing also. The paragraph below sets out the relevant legislation with regard to treating animals

The Veterinary Surgery Act of 1966 prohibits anyone, other than a qualified veterinary surgeon from treating animals, including diagnosis of ailments and giving advice on such diagnosis.

However the healing of animals by contact healing, by laying of hands or distant healing is legal. The Protection of Animals Act 1911 requires that if an animal clearly needs treatment from a veterinary surgeon the owner must obtain this. To give emergency First Aid to animals for the purpose of saving life or relieving pain is permissible under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 Schedule 3. Horses can help you to find out more about yourself!

My horses can help you to learn more about yourself. They are very intuitive, and can mirror our thoughts and feelings. Horses make very good counsellors, and have led me to pursue this avenue myself in a major career change. I am training as a counsellor myself, and use my listening skills to help you with self-discovery. If you would like time to talk, please contact me for further details.

Time to talk after a reiki session, or work with your horse or pet, is confidential, unless I am legally required to disclose information. I am a level 4 student, and will refer you to a fully trained counsellor if we feel this is useful for you.
